2001 - Jim Jarmusch (eds Rolf Aurich & Stefan Reinecke)

My command of German isn't exactly something to be envied, but my impression of this book is that it certainly is a treat for anybody who's interested in Jarmusch. It's a thick volume, with just over 300 pages and over 500 pictures. It has a short forword by Wim Wenders, followed by a translation of the 1999 Geoff Andrew/London Film Festival interview (which is also included in my interview collection). Then follows a 75 page essay by Ralph Eue, the Berlin based film critic who was one of the first people to discover Jim Jarmusch, when he visited a German film festival in 1980 after having just completed Permanent Vacation. (Eue was also the first person to do an in-depth interview with Jarmusch, included in an issue of the German film magazine "Filmkritik", which also can be read, in an English translation, in my collection). The article is part biography (Eue became friends with JJ, so he includes some 'inside' info, along with a reprint of a letter Jim sent him in the early 80's, talking about trying to finance his Garden of Divorce short film project etc), part fim analysis.

Then follows three more essays - Rolf Aurich on Jarmusch's links to Europe, Klaus Walter on the role of music in his films, and Christine Heise on JJ's history as a musician with the Del-Byzanteens. Finally each of his films are given the essay review-treatment (including the Coffee and Cigarettes shorts).

There is also an exhaustive filmography and bibliography.

[I've also picked up a few tid-bits of information which seem potentially rather interesting, and I'm wondering if anyone here is able to help:

There's reference to a collection of photos, "Blickwechsel", published in 1988 in conjunction with the 25-year anniversary of DAAD (Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes), which should include a photo of Ronald Reagan taken by JJ when both happened to be in Berlin.

Also, there's a reference to an article in "Tempo" (9, september 1987), written by JJ as his response to the question "Why do you make films?" I don't recall having heard him answer that question elsewhere, and would be grateful if anybody could track it down.]

THIS IS AN UNOFFICIAL WEB SITE. I have no official connection to Jim Jarmusch and cannot assist with any inquiries that should be directed to him, or to his production company. Seriously! In all other matters, feel free to contact me
